A Canadian family is searching for answers after a 44-year-old father of three died following a lengthy wait in an emergency room despite repeatedly reporting severe chest pain.
According to family members, Prashant Sreekumar, an accountant and devoted father, began experiencing intense chest pain while at work in Edmonton, Alberta, in December. Concerned about his condition, a client drove him directly to a local hospital for medical attention.
Upon arrival, Sreekumar was reportedly assessed and underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG). According to his family, he was informed that nothing immediately significant had been detected and was instructed to wait for further evaluation.
What followed, they say, was a difficult and increasingly concerning wait.
His father, who remained by his side throughout the ordeal, recalled Prashant repeatedly expressing how unbearable the pain had become.
Family members claim his blood pressure continued to rise as the hours passed, reportedly reaching dangerous levels. They also allege that he received only limited pain relief while waiting to be seen.
More than eight hours after arriving at the emergency department, Sreekumar’s name was finally called.
According to his father, Prashant walked into the treatment area and sat down. Moments later, he stood up, placed his hand on his chest, and suddenly collapsed.
Medical staff immediately rushed to assist him and reportedly attempted life-saving measures. Tragically, those efforts were unsuccessful, and he died following what has been described as an apparent cardiac arrest.
Sreekumar leaves behind his wife and three children, ages 3, 10, and 14.
Family members describe him as a loving husband, dedicated father, and someone who brought laughter and positivity to those around him. His sudden death has left relatives devastated and searching for explanations.
Hospital officials have expressed condolences to the family and confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the death are under review. Meanwhile, Sreekumar’s wife says she wants accountability and a full understanding of what happened during the hours leading up to her husband’s death.
The case has reignited discussions about emergency room wait times, patient care, and the challenges facing healthcare systems across Canada.
